Spoofing is when hackers manipulate the caller ID on your phone to make you believe that they are from one place when they really are just criminals trying to steal your information.
Lately spoofers have been trying to call you from your own number! Here are a few tips to help:
1: If you don’t know the number, don’t answer the phone. If it’s a legitimate call, they will leave a voicemail.
2: Do not provide personal information if you did not make the call.
3: Put your number on the Do Not Call Registry.
4: If someone claims to be from a reputable company, such as the IRS, hang up, look the number up on the official website and call them back. They will have a record of the call and what they were calling about.
