With everyone switching to chip cards, hackers have had to change their equipment as well.
We have heard of skimmers, the device that criminals attach to the ATMs that can read the strip on your card, with the chip cards they had to make an adaptation. They created shimmers. These are a different kind of skimmer that can read the strip as well as the chip in your card!

Since these are easy to install they aren’t just at ATMs anymore, they could be at self check outs, gas stations, or basically any place that is not manned by an employee.
How do you protect yourself?
Avoid stand alone ATMs
Check your balance frequently
Make sure that there is nothing moving on the card reader that you are using. The card readers should never have moving parts.
Report discrepancies immediately!
